Sufism and Islam don't hold the notion of original sin as the Christians do. Instead there is more of an ignorance or "forgetfullness" at work. To help assist in answering your question, it might be helpful to look at the theries of Sahl al-Tustari (d. 896). During pre-creation, on the Day of Covenant (Yaum al-Mithaq), Tustari believed that from God came forth the light of Muhammad (nur Muhammad). From this light he brought forth the light of Adam (nur Adam). It is interesting to note here that in Tustari's cosmology, that the the God-seekers (muridun) were brought forth from the light of Adam, but the the divinely-desired (muradun) were brought forth from the light of Muhammad (nur Muhammad). From this the clay of Adam (tin al-uzza) was created. From the loins of Adam, through his seed, the entire creation was brought forth, and were asked to testify upon God's oneness (tawhid). All did so. Creation was then put back in Adam's loins. When we are physically born, however we become attached to the material world, and we forget the pact we made with Allah. Therefore material desire gathers on the soul like dust, and we need to polish it, to make our souls better receptacles for the divine light. Most Sufis see the soul as a mirror which needs polishing. Therefore the more we deshevel ourselves from our carnal desires, the more we remember God. In that sense our souls do mature: they progress from infancy to adulthood. In opposition, Tustari also envisions a Day of Resurrection (Yaum al-Qiyamah), in which all creation are accounted for their actions. Those who are favoured will be sent to Paradise (janna), while the others will be sent into the hellfire. Out of those who enter paradise, a select few will be granted an audience with God, even fewer still an encounter with God, and even fewer still sustenance in God (baqa al-Haqq). I don't know if this confuses you, or sheds light on your question, but I hope it helps. We all learn according to our understanding. Children are more likely to learn through stories and examples, rather than abstract concepts (not even we can understand them always). In relation to the question you ask about the soul's relationship to the body is an interesting one. I think the other tariqas subscribers will have to help with their insight. Is the soul embodied, that is the soul given a body (which makes sense if the soul is eternal) or is the body given a soul (which in sense would give it life)? Is the soul infused upon a body during its feotal development or is the body used to cover or provide a garment for the soul in this world? The second question regarding the depression and psychological states affecting our soul, could be inversed possibly and instead looked at as a cause of our soul, so that depression and other psychological states are the result of the soul, its torment and its joy. The soul it seems is definately a bridge between the physical and spiritual world. I'm not sure what you mean by "breaking the causation" though, could you please elaborate? We must also remember that the soul is not a physical entity. It is said for example that when an individual dies, the souls of all his close friends and family members will be there to receive its birth into the next world. Physically this cannot be so, but in a world devoid of time or space, this is very possible, even though we are living physical lives. Hope this adds to the discussion. wa-salaam Rizwan P.S. The body we have is, according to the Qur'an and many ahadith, the one which we will be resurrected with in the Hereafter. When Allah 'Breathes the Ruh' into us some time after conception, it could be described as sending the spirit/soul into its 'clothing', because the soul is where the priority lies. In 1985-86 I began to study Islam, stopped for a while, and then resumed my study in January of 1992. That same month, my supervisor at the state-related University where I worked began to behave in such a bizarre and hostile manner towards me that I began to maintain documentation. In April of 1992 I accepted Islam. Shortly thereafter, in July, my supervisor began a campaign of harassment and false accusations against me. This culminated in my termination in October of '92. I was employed as the Drug and Alcohol Prevention Specialist. This position was partly funded with Federal dollars. My job description read, in part, that I was to "plan, implement and evaluate" programs for the prevention of alcohol and other drug abuse. My job performance was excellent as were my relations with all other faculty, staff and students with whom I came in contact. This termination has had a severely negative effect on my finances and career development. Prior to my termination I approached the University's Human Resources as per the employee manual. Their representative behaved as an advocate for my supervisor and has admitted breaking my confidentiality. The Affirmative Action office simply referred me back to Human Resources. My requests for a more detailed job description, third party counseling/arbitration, and transfer to another supervisor were all denied. The University did not follow their own disciplinary guidelines as written in their policy manual. My ex-supervisor is a secularized Jew. (While I think this is relevant in this case, please don't use it as an excuse to hate all Jews. They are our cousins in faith and among them are sincere believers.) All the accusations she made against me that were used to justify my termination are absolutely, categorically false. Upon my termination I filed a complaint of religious discrimination with the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission (PHRC). To say that their investigation, and the supposed review of the investigation by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), were *severely* deficient would be an understatement. I am asking for your assistance in my attempt to have my case re-investigated. I have been unable to find a lawyer who does not have a conflict of interest and will take the case on a contingency basis. The only Muslim lawyer in the city works for the city and cannot take outside cases. A recent front page article by the New York Times reported upon the deficient investigations performed by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The examples cited were exactly like my experience. For instance, allowing the University's lawyers present during the questioning of witnesses who still worked for the University. Such practices merited the reopening of a case that is similar to mine. I have not made this situation known to you before for fear of seeming like a publicity hound. America's court system has a real problem with civil law suits. We have become a litigious and sue-happy country and I did not want to even offer the appearance of being like that. However, I feel that the NYT article legitimates my complaints enough to merit my going public and requesting public support. There are two matters of justice here: 1) This University is the largest employer in Allegheny County and accepts generous amounts of tax money. Its failure to follow its own guidelines and protect an employee from a malicious and destructive supervisor is unconscionable. All employees are at risk and need protection. 2) Both the PHRC and the EEOC are public, tax-funded agencies whose purpose is to protect Americans' civil rights. By engaging in shoddy investigations they betray the public trust and place our civil rights (such as freedom of religious practice) in danger. I have written to a number of people (in both the EEOC and the PHRC) requesting that the case be reopened in light of the NYT article. Robert Crane of the American Muslim Council is somewhat aware of the situation. I am asking you to please take a few moments and notify the EEOC of your interest in the outcome of this case and especially in the quality of the investigation. Please request that there be a completely new investigation. If you are able to do this in good conscience, I would also ask that you make this message available to others in your local masjids, in sha Allah. I have ample documentation, much of which can be transferred via e-mail should anyone be interested. This includes my personal documentation of events, my rebuttals to the accusations against me, correspondence concerning the deficiencies of the investigation (with references to the final report), etc. The article I referred to is by Peter T. Kilborn on the front page of the November 26 issue of the New York Times. I have spoken with him and, at his request, have sent him materials on this case. He is not sure, though, whether or not he will be continuing his investigation of the EEOC. When writing make sure you refer to: Jeremiah D. McAuliffe v.
