Most of the female companions were there to look pretty and\or say "what's happening Doctor", but several female companions were able to rise above that. Sarah Jane certainly did. She even saved the Doctor's life on occasion. I will admit that the role was probably very thin on paper, but Lis Sladen energized it with her performances. The Sarah Jane & 4th Doctor years is my favorite DW era. <> Since she only got her job because of a relative in UNIT, Jo did her best. Though it is much more obscure than 'avenging angels' or 'the bartender and the thief'. I've just been driving around listening to 'Copperhead Road' by Steve earle, who is fantastic imho. Anyway, where I'm coming from in this instance is Travis II. OK it's the wrong accent (he's southern white trash), but this is a song about a working class psycho who joins the army and goes completely barmy. The voice he uses is so tough and mean, and insolent. I love it. In each verse of the song he gets madder and badder, and the music gets more extreme. Fantastic.
