Penny's original point, with which Una agreed, was that compromise for the
sake of power and corruption are pretty much the same thing. I thought of
Augustus as someone who made a good many compromises to secure his own
power, and then went a fair way towards reducing the corruption that had
become endemic during the days of the Roman Republic.

The Second Triumverate of Augustus, Lepidus and Antony seized power in a
bloodthirsty coup, and consolidated on their power with a series of purges.
Then Augustus betrayed the Triumverate, defeated Antony and seized power for
himself. Yet this heralded not only the Pax Romana, but also a better deal
for Rome's ordinary people. The offices and institutions which wielded
power in the days of the Republic were not dissolved, but brought into the
jurisdiction of the Emperor. The Emperor then proceeded to dilute the power
of the hereditary senators in favour of more able and intelligent candidates
drawn from the ranks of the common people.

The question is: was Augustus corrupt? There is a strong case to be made
for saying that he improved the lives of his citizens: but he seized power
with the sort of ruthlessness that made Servalan and Sula look like rank
amateurs. :-)

Actually there was only one episode missing due to that strike, and it was
written by Philip Martin. The other three were never even written - that
would have been an opening arc for season 2.

Well, that change must be why it was delayed until November, cos when the
rumours first started, both Steve Cole and Chris Boucher denied it.

Still, if it's true, it's nice to see that fan-wishes can have their
effect.

There are 4 new pictures for captioning, all taken from Paul
Darrow's stunning turn as Captain Hawkins in "Doctor Who and
the Silurians." For inspiration, read the captions from last
month's frames from "Bergerac" and "Silver" with Gareth
Thomas, and peruse the past caption contests back to March
1996. Go on, I dare you.

 The url is http://pages.cthome.net/blakes7/CCurrent.html and
SNET seems to have fixed the slow connection problem.

The bad links to the Character Profiles on the Data Banks page
have also been fixed.

At long last, we have some updates on our web pages for your enjoyment and
perusal:

Most importantly, of course, we have a new Leah cartoon, this time featuring
Duncan and Methos.

We have some updates on photo orders and MediaWest con, as well as a report
on some Fan Q winners.

We have a new website for our brand new Blakes 7 adult zines, Southern
Comfort 10.5 and Southern Comfort 11.5, including samples of the gorgeous
color covers (by Leah) and links to some reviews of the new zines.

We also have an update on the status of the upcoming new Highlander zines.

We're hoping to have new reviews and links from Donan Woods sometime over the
weekend. Stay tuned for more news.

Fascinating. I think Chris would only write the missing episodes if paid the
going rate so to speak. (Which puts it rather beyond fanzine economics) The
ones I'm publishing are ones he'd already written in novel form many years ago.

I'd love to know how the series would have developed though. I always saw Mars
as an end to a serason. Or was it a last script brought forward?
